Talks highlight value of apprenticeships to EDP Top 100 firm

The value of apprenticeships formed the theme of a roundtable discussion between officials from Norse Group and Norwich North MP Chloe Smith.

The session took place during a visit of the EDP Top 100 firm which is aiming to employ more than 100 apprentices on the company scheme during this year.

Norse commits more than £880,000 a year to apprenticeships across its three operating companies, Norse Commercial Services, NPS and Norsecare, a figure match-funded by Norfolk County council.

Prince’s Trust report says more young people in East Anglia want to run their own business

The East of England could be on the brink of a “youth business boom” as the economic climate drives more young people to consider becoming their own boss, a new report says.

 

The survey by the The Prince’s Trust found 36pc of the region’s 16 to 30-year-olds thought they would be self-employed in the future – higher than the national average of 30pc.

Nationally, despite just 5pc of young people currently being self-employed, more than a quarter (27pc) of those surveyed claimed they were “increasingly” thinking of setting up in business.

Norwich For Jobs campaign targets region’s top companies

The pioneering campaign, launched by city MP Chloe Smith at the end of January, has already seen dozens of local companies pledge their support.

And in just the first quarter, more than 300 paid jobs and apprenticeships have been committed, and well over 100 young people are already taking these roles.

Now the campaign, which is working closely with Norfolk Chamber of Commerce and many other partners, is reaching out to all EDP 100 companies – a list of Norfolk and Suffolk’s most successful businesses.

Norwich for Jobs campaign calls for experts to help cut youth unemployment

Norwich For Jobs is organising a seminar with key county figures and organisations to help it better understand how to support hard-to-reach young people who face particular barriers to finding work.

Representatives of the YMCA, probation service and Blue Cat Initiative are among those set to attend and campaign organisers hope they will also bring along some of the youngsters they work with to share first-hand stories of their job searches.

Norfolk employers urged to provide more work experience opportunities

A leading figure in the Norfolk business community has called on employers to provide more work experience opportunities for young people as part of the Norwich for Jobs campaign.

Andrew Barnes, senior partner at law firm Howes Percival in Norwich, is a member of the NFJ steering group and runs its employer panel.

He has called on businesses to develop work experience programmes to give more school-age and college students a taste of a real working environment.
